Anjo Gabriel

Today's highight? Easy. It was hearing Dom La Nena's "Anjo Gabriel" for the first time.

It's all about the voice and the simple, beautiful piano line.  I've Gideon Coe to thank for hearing it and I've The Pastels to thank for being tuned-in to his show when it aired through their tweeting that Swell Maps were being played on it 'right now!' earlier in the evening.  If I'm being 100% honest, I'd rather that Dom La Nena's was the sole voice so that it was hers which was heard last but that's a minor gripe and won't prevent me from thinking of the song fondly and wanting to hear it again and again.  I bet if she teamed up with Francois and The Atlas Mountains the results would be sublime.

  1. Hi- i found this blog whilst looking for an online mp3 of the petticoats track 'normal', fuck your blog is good! I'm meant to be studying, but no chance of that now! Writing from NZ, Auckland to be precise, see you like Roy Montgomery, any others you like from nz??

  2. Aw, that's really kind of you Alice. That Petticoats stuff is amazing! You're spending your time well if you're rummaging online for stuff that great.

Ah, New Zealand has produced some incredible music! I love The Clean, The Chills, Look Blue Go Purple, The Dead C, The Pin Group etc. etc. from the classic era of Flying Nun. As far as modern groups go, I love a lot of what Fishrider is releasing such as Opposite Sex and The Prophet Hens. Be sure to click the Did Not Chart link as it's a great blog and is in l.o.v.e with New Zealand music, too.

    cheers, brogues

    1. Ah you named the best flying nun bands :0) but yeah so many more- I did visit the other blog too- great stuff

The petticoats song I discovered on this amazing Mississippi records compliation- great song, mental video, i love the crazy darth vader/wizard of oz, Morrissey montage. I don't have anything else they have done though, do they have much else?

And yeah musically NZ has got a lot of interesting stuff going on at the moment, great bands in both christchurch and auckland also

Lately i've been obsessed with this shortlived now defunct band, in particular the songs 'take a tour' and the track titled 'untitled', this their bandcamp and i'm pretty sure it is free to download.

  4. Heh heh...good work on checking out Did Not Chart :)

I don't know all too much about The Petticoats. I heard them on a Boyracer podcast for the mighty Slumberland Records years ago.

Cheers for the links. 'Turning Red' is ace - really like Angrignon's voice. I'm enjoying the fairly bizarre stereo mix, too.

    cheers, brogues

    1. Hey again,

Glad you like Imaginary Pants! Rose Melberg can do no wrong in my book. Her new group Pups just released this:

      What a dream!

The whole Lightships lp is a treat. Gerard Love is so talented. I think the lp deserved much better recognition than it got...

      cheers, brogues
